Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I

Sonic the Hedgehog hasn't exactly been absent from the realm of video games since his debut on the Sega Genesis, but there hasn't been a proper entry in the original series of Sonic games since 1994's Sonic & Knuckles. Finally, the first official sequel to those games in 16 years is here. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 is, for the most part, a faithful follow-up to Sonic's earliest games, and in its best moments, it captures the joy and exhilaration that a good Sonic game is capable of delivering. Unfortunately, it doesn't manage to do this consistently, and too many dull and frustrating moments keep this from being a worthy successor to those classic games.

      Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing

If you're trying to determine who the greatest Sega character of all time is, it's going to be pretty difficult to devise a competition in which Ulala and Sonic are on even ground. The Space Channel 5 star would win any dance-off (not even Michael Jackson stood a chance), and no one is stopping the blue hedgehog from grabbing golden rings. But if you put 20 characters from Sega's rich history into race-ready rides and equip them with all sorts of wacky weapons, then you might at least find out which of them is the best driver. Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing closely follows the formula of the genre-defining Mario Kart series, but this arcade racer is far from a cheap cash-in. With 24 well-designed courses and ultraprecise controls, swerving your way to victory is a joy

        Sonic Riders

Like most popular platformer franchises, the Sonic series has dabbled in the racing genre in the past with games like Sonic R for the Saturn. Despite the fact that Sonic's already-speedy nature might seem like a perfect fit for a racing game of some sort, the results of these attempts have been disappointing thus far. Sonic Riders is the latest attempt to get Sonic back on the race track, though this one eschews the typical kart- and foot-racing brands of racing usually found in a racer starring popular platformer heroes. Instead, Riders gives Sonic and pals their very own Back to the Future II-style hoverboards, which they can use to dart and dash around wacky tracks of varying levels of difficulty. Unfortunately, Sonic Riders isn't much better than any of Sega's previous attempts to make Sonic a racing hero, simply because it can't quite keep its diverse and chaotic racing mechanics together in one cohesive package. There are times when you'll find yourself enjoying how blazingly fast the game can go and other times when you'll be frustrated beyond belief by the very same thing. And that's all within a single race.

          Sonic Heroes

Sonic Heroes strips out a lot of the shooting and hunting stuff found in the Sonic Adventure games, but it retains the large cast of characters. The game gets away with this by giving you control of three characters at once and dividing the characters up into four different teams--Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Rose, and Team Chaotix. Each team member has his or her own strengths, and your abilities as a team change depending on which character you have set as the team leader.

            Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut

Sonic Adventure DX is structured a little differently than its sequel, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, in that there's a hub area that Sonic and the other characters in the game have to find their way through to access the actual levels. The portions of the game that focus on this hub area seem a little pointless at times, particularly when all you have to do is take a key from one location to another, but most of the time it simply functions as a tool for advancing the plot

            Sonic R

Five characters at a time race to cross the finish line first. The game is similar to cart racing games such as Mario Kart, but most characters have the ability to jump, adding platforming to the mix. In addition, each of the ten playable characters has a different speed and a unique set of abilities. The abilities are in line the respective character usual abilities, such as Sonic having a faster speed or Knuckles being able to glide.

            Sonic 3D Blast

When Sonic the Hedgehog rocketed onto the Sega Genesis back in 1991, sales of the fledgling game platform shot through the ceiling. By creating a cute and identifiable mascot and coupling him with a solid platform game, the bucks began to roll in and sequels galore followed. It's six years later and, judging from Sonic 3D Blast, it doesn't look like our favorite blue rodent is doing as well. The game is a straightforward port from the 32-bit Sega Saturn version - which, in turn, was a straightforward port from the 16-bit Sega Genesis version.
